What is a home energy ecosystem – and how does it work?

Key takeaways

  • A home energy ecosystem connects solar panels, a home battery and a heat pump into one intelligent system.
  • Energy is generated, stored and used automatically, helping your home rely less on the grid.
  • When everything works together – optimised by Aira Intelligence – energy bills can fall by up to 90% compared to a gas boiler.

Your boiler does one job: heating your home. But your home uses energy for much more than that.

A home energy ecosystem connects solar panels, a home battery and a heat pump into one intelligent system. Instead of separate devices working independently, everything works together to generate, store and use energy more efficiently.

When these technologies are connected and optimised by Aira Intelligence, your home can run largely on the energy it produces itself – reducing what you buy from the grid and cutting energy bills by up to 90% compared to a gas boiler.*

What is a home energy ecosystem?

A home energy ecosystem is a group of clean energy technologies designed to work together.

At the centre of the system is the Aira Power Hub, which manages how energy flows between your home, your battery and the grid.

Overseeing everything is Aira Intelligence – the AI that learns how your home uses energy, adapts to the weather forecast and responds to electricity tariffs to run your system as efficiently as possible.

Together, these components form the Aira Home Energy System – designed and installed in one place, and supported by the Aira Guarantee

The Components of the Aira Home Energy System

Solar panels: 100% renewable energy

Solar panels generate clean electricity for your home using daylight.

That means from the moment they’re installed, you buy less electricity from the grid. On bright days, your panels may produce more energy than your home needs.

When solar is combined with a battery and a heat pump, more of the energy your home uses can come directly from your roof.

Aira Power Store: storage

Without a battery, any surplus solar electricity is exported to the grid.

The Aira Power Store stores that energy instead, so you can use it later – in the evening, on cloudy days, or when electricity prices are higher.

Aira Intelligence helps decide when energy should be stored, used in your home or exported to the grid, so your system runs as efficiently as possible.

Aira Heat Pump: efficient heating

The Aira Heat Pump replaces your gas boiler and heats your home using electricity instead of fossil fuels. Because heat pumps move heat rather than generate it by burning fuel, they are four times more efficient than a boiler. Learn more about what an air source heat pump is here.

Designed in Sweden and installed by Aira Academy-trained technicians across the UK, the Aira Heat Pump works reliably even in very cold temperatures and provides heating and hot water all year round.

Pair it with solar panels and a home battery, and your heating can run partly on electricity your home generates itself.

The UK government currently offers the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, helping reduce the upfront cost of installing a heat pump.

Aira Power Hub: energy control

The Aira Power Hub is the inverter at the centre of the system.

Solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity. But your home runs on alternating current (AC). The Power Hub converts that solar electricity into usable power for your home.

It also works the other way. When electricity comes from the grid, the Power Hub can convert AC power back into DC so your Aira Power Store battery can charge.

Alongside this conversion, it manages how energy flows between your solar panels, battery, heat pump and the grid – helping ensure energy is used, stored or exported at the right time.

The Power Hub is included with every Aira solar and battery installation. Learn more about what an inverter is here.

Optional: EV Charger and Smart Appliances

If you have an electric vehicle, your home energy system can also work alongside your EV charger. That means your car can charge using solar energy generated during the day – or during cheaper overnight tariff periods.

Because Aira Intelligence adapts to your electricity tariff, your heat pump and home energy system can work with EV tariffs too. So you don’t have to choose between charging your car cheaply and running your home efficiently.

Other appliances – like underfloor heating or washing machines – can also run when solar generation is highest or electricity prices are lowest.

The more devices connected to the system, the smarter and more efficient your home’s energy use becomes.

How the Aira Home Energy System Works: A typical day

Morning

As daylight increases, solar panels begin generating electricity. Your home uses this energy first, while any surplus begins charging the Aira Power Store.

Midday

Solar generation is usually highest. Your home runs on solar energy while the battery stores any excess.

Evening

As solar production drops, the battery powers your home instead of drawing electricity from the grid.

Night

If needed, electricity can be imported from the grid – often during cheaper tariff periods.

The result is a home that relies far less on grid electricity over the course of a year.

The Benefits of the Aira Home Energy System

1. Lower energy bills

When solar panels, battery storage and a heat pump work together, your home can use far more of the energy it generates itself.

Combined with Aira Intelligence optimisation, this can reduce energy bills by up to 90% compared to a gas boiler.*

2. Greater energy independence

Generating and storing your own electricity means you rely less on the grid.

That reduces your exposure to energy price spikes and gives you more control over how your home uses energy.

3. Improved home energy rating and property value

Homes with solar panels, heat pumps and battery storage often see improvements in their EPC rating.

Higher EPC ratings can make properties more attractive to buyers and may increase resale value.

A system built for the future

Energy systems are becoming smarter. Dynamic tariffs, electric vehicles and new grid technologies are already changing how homes use energy.

The Aira Home Energy System is designed to adapt to these changes, with Aira Intelligence continuously optimising how your home produces and uses energy.

Before you switch to the Aira Home Energy System

Compatibility between devices

Not all solar panels, batteries and heat pumps are designed to work together.

The Aira Home Energy System is built as an integrated system where every component is designed to communicate and work together efficiently. If you already have solar, Aira devices (The Aira Heat Pump, Store and Hub) can work seamlessly alongside them.

Upfront costs and long-term savings

Installing a home energy system requires an upfront investment.

However, the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, 0% VAT on installations, and our monthly payment options can significantly reduce the initial cost.

Up to 90% lower energy bills can then help offset those payments over time.

You can start small

Many homeowners begin by installing a heat pump. Solar panels and battery storage can then be added later as part of the same system.

Because the Aira system is designed to expand, it can grow with your home’s energy needs.

Ready to take control of your home’s energy?

The Aira Home Energy System brings together heating, solar generation and battery storage in one connected system.

Aira designs, installs and supports everything — from your free home energy assessment through to installation and ongoing care.

And with the 15-Year Aira Guarantee on the heat pump and 10 years on Aira Power devices, your system is built to perform for the long term.

* Savings of up to 90% on energy bills refer to the combined effect of the Aira Heat Pump, solar PV, and Aira Power Store, compared to a gas-heated home with no solar generation. Individual results will vary depending on property type, household consumption, and energy tariff.
