1. Live in England or Wales

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is only available for properties within England or Wales. Other schemes and funding are available for properties in Scotland and Northern Ireland. If you live in Scotland, you may be eligible for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan .

To receive the BUS grant from the government, the application must be made on behalf of the property owner. During the process Ofgem will reach out to the property owner via email to confirm that the installer has applied for the grant on behalf of the property owner.

3. Completely replace a fossil fuel heating system

The heating system being replaced must be a fossil fuel system, or an electric system that did not include a heat pump. Air to air and hybrid heat pumps which include a fossil fuel heating system, and gas condensing boilers are not eligible under the BUS.

4. Have a valid energy performance certificate

A valid EPC is less than 10 years old. Don’t worry if you don't have one. If you need an EPC, we will sort it for you. Contact us to learn more.

What’s included in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The UK government offers a grant of up to £9,000 towards the cost and installation of air source and ground source heat pumps for homes replacing an oil or LPG boiler – or £7,500 when replacing a gas boiler. A £5,000 grant is also available for biomass boilers. The scheme does not cover air-to-air or hybrid heat pumps. The grant is available to eligible households in England and Wales. Availability and funding may change over time.

Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme available in Scotland?

No, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is only available in England and Wales. But don’t worry. If you’re in Scotland, there’s a fantastic alternative. Through the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan, you could get up to £15,000 in funding to switch to a heat pump. That includes a £7,500 grant and a £7,500 interest-free loan. And even more if you live in a rural area. You’ll need to apply for the Scottish funding yourself, but we’ll guide you through every step. You can also visit Home Energy Scotland to find out more.

Does receiving funding from other grants such as GBIS and ECO4 affect your BUS eligibility?

Yes. Some funding schemes can affect your eligibility. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a standalone grant, and you can’t combine it with ECO4 or GBIS for the same installation. So, if you’ve already received funding for a heat pump through ECO4, you won’t be eligible for BUS. That said, you may still be able to apply for separate grants to cover other home improvements like insulation, as long as they’re not part of the BUS installation. And just so you know: if you’ve previously received funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler, you’re no longer eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The BUS grant for oil and LPG homes has increased to £9,000

Homes heated by oil or LPG in England and Wales are now eligible for a £9,000 grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme – an increase of £1,500. The grant for homes replacing a gas boiler remains £7,500.
